Did You Know?

......that when the first group was formed, a major concern was that the pensions of women who retired before 1970 be equalized.  This was achieved in 1974, but they didn't get back payments.

.......that Betty Lawson, Gay Pelchat, and Vera Henderson designed the original ARTA  logo.

.......this region used to be MHRTA (Medicine Hat Retired Teachers' Association), but in 1996 it was changed to MHADRTA (Medicine Hat and District Retired Teachers' Association).  A motion to call it Southeastern Alberta Retired Teachers' Association was defeated.

.......in 1997 MHADRTA celebrated it's 25th anniversary.

.......May 24, 1997 Madeline Fischer was recognized as the designer of our official logo which is used on pins etc.  (picture and explanation are on her recognition page)

                                                       

...t needs to be noted that I, Madeline Fischer, hold and retain the design rights to this design therefore any changes to the design remain in the domain until such time as she releases them.  This design is for the exclusive use of the Medicine Hat Retired Teachers' association for their logo, pins, and clothing.  No other agent can use the designs as part of their logo etc.

 

....... that we support the Rotary Music Festival 

 

....... that every summer during Stampede Week our members are hosts at the Little School House in the Pioneer Village and we support it financially.

 

....... that we have a member on the teachers’ convention planning committee

 

....... that we sponsor a speaker at the convention for teachers who are planning retirement

 

....... that (2007) Judy Wonnenberg was on the ARTA Health and Wellness Benefits Committee, Donna Mae Goldade was on ARTA Governance Committee and Madeline Fischer was representative for the ATA Educational Trust

 

....... that Madeline Fischer was co-editor and editor of ARTA News and Views for 7/8 years

 

........that in 2008 Donna Mae Goldade, Stella Dalsto, Fay Eldson and Ray Morrison designed a web page for MHADRTA

..... that Donna Mae Goldade, a member of Mad Hatters Art Club and Medicine Hat Art Club, had a painting chosen to be on permanent display at Foothills Hospital in Calgary

 

..... when a member passes away our branch donates $20.00 to the scholarship fund of the University where that member graduated from.

 

                                      Sept. 2008  general meeting...Dr. Ken Sauer was the                                                guest speaker.

 

                                        Dr. Ken Sauer, former Medicine Hat School District                                                    Superintendent and former alderman, spoke on the                                                  highlights of his teaching career and on the important                                              role of volunteering that went with it.  He noted that over                                          60% of the volunteers for the recent Alberta Summer                                                Games had been teachers or former teachers.  Dr. Sauer                                          thanked all the MHADRTA members for their many                                                    contributions over the years. 

 

                                         On May 15, 2009 he received The Order of Canada

                                        (our country's highest civilian honour)

....that Marg Derbyshire was inducted into the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame (2011)

.....that on Sept. 5, 2012 Madeline Fischer was given an honorary membership to MHADTRA

.....that in 2013 Judy Wonnenberg was recognized for her outstanding ARTA contributions. 
 

..........that in 2014 Grace Christie was honored as a Senior of Distinction.  
 

........that in 2015 Larry Henderson received the Medicine Hat's College's honorary          applied baccalaureate degree.
 

........that in 2015 Annita Pinder was given an ARTA Volunteer award
