BYLAWS (2006)
Of the
Medicine Hat And District Retired Teachers’ Association
(M H A D R T A)
Article I: Name
Section 1. The name of the organization will be the Medicine Hat and District Retired Teachers’ Association (MHADRTA).
Section 2. The address and telephone number shall be that of the president.

Article II: Objectives
Section 1. To appoint a representative to the Board of Directors of the Alberta Retired
Teachers’ Association (ARTA).
Section 2. To inform local members of the activities of ARTA as they relate to our
welfare.
Section 3. To explore and discuss ways and means of improving and protecting the
welfare of our members.
Section 4. To promote MHADRTA as a recognized influence in the community
Section 5. To maintain recognition as a group in order to qualify for group contract rates
where available.
Section 6. To maintain a group which will meet for social enjoyment.

Article III: Membership
Section 1. Member: The Medicine and District Retired Teachers’ Association will
accept into full membership with voting power any retired teacher who is
receiving pension from the Alberta Teacher’s Retirement Fund (ATRF),
Barnett House, Edmonton, AB.
Section 2. Associate Member:
(a). The Medicine Hat and District Retired Teachers’ Association will accept as associate members:
i. the spouse of any teacher described above;
ii. the spouse of a deceased retired teacher receiving a joint pension
iii. former Alberta teachers who have taught 10 or more years but are not in receipt of a pension
iv. any retired teacher from another province who is in receipt of a teachers’ pension and who is living in the Medicine Hat area;
v. the spouse of any teacher described in (iv) above;
(b). Associate and non-ARTA members will have voting power as follows:
i. full voting powers on matters of local concern
ii. no voting powers on matters relating to ARTA.
(c). Associate and non-Arta members may be appointed to committees.
Section 3. Honorary Member:
Honorary membership may be granted by the executive to any MHADRTA
Member or former member who, through the years, has been exceptionally
active in educational circles.

Article IV: Meetings
Section 1. An annual general meeting shall be held in June, at which time an election of officers for the coming year will take place.
Section 2. The president, with the support of the executive, shall have the power to decide the dates and nature of the meetings, which will be held throughout the year.

Article V: Officers
Section 1. (a) The table officers of MHADRTA (president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, 2nd vice president, secretary, and treasurer) shall be elected at the annual general meeting.
Section 2. (a) The executive shall consist of the following:
- past president - treasurer
- president - membership secretary
- 1st vice president - contact secretary
- 2nd vice president - cards and memorial secretary
- secretary - MHADRTA members elected/appointed to ARTA
(b) The executive shall serve at the nominating committee
Section 3. Duties
(a) The past president shall serve as chairperson of the nominating committee for the election of table officers (president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, secretary, treasurer) and the appointment of the membership secretary, contact secretary, cards and memorial secretary, and MHADRTA members elected/appointed to ARTA.
(b) The president shall:
- preside at all meetings of the executive and MHADRTA
- be an ex-officio member of all committees on MHADRTA
- attend all board of directors meetings of ARTA
- serve as a delegate or appoint a replacement to the annual general meeting of ARTA
- appoint MHADRTA members to attend other meetings or to serve on committees as the need arises.
(c) The 1st vice president shall:
- assume the duties of the president in the absence of the president
- serve on the program committee
(d) The 2nd vice president :
- shall serve as chairperson of the program committee
- shall preside at the general meeting in the absence of the 1st vice president and president
- may serve as a member of the contact committee
(e) The secretary shall:
- be responsible for keeping records and recording minutes of meetings
- be responsible for correspondence
(f) The treasurer shall:
- be responsible for the proper conduct of the financial affairs of MHADRTA
- prepare a financial report for each meeting and a year-end report
(g) The membership secretary:
- shall serve as chairperson of the membership committee
- shall collect membership fees and issue receipts for them
- shall submit periodic reports based on current MHADRTA and ARTA membership
- may serve as a member of the contact committee
(h) The contact secretary
- organize the contact committee
- serve as chairperson of the contact committee
(i) The cards and memorial committee shall:
- send sympathy cards to families of members
- add names of deceased members to memorial plaque annually
- report member achievements at meetings
Section 4: Only those members qualifying under Article III – section 1 and are members of ARTA shall be eligible for election as a table officer.
Section 5: None of the executive defined in article V – section 2 shall receive any form of remuneration for services rendered. Members of MHADRTA shall be reimbursed for authorized expenditures necessary for carrying on the business of MHADRTA.

Article VI: Amendments
Section 1: The MHADRTA bylaws may be amended, following 30 days notification at the annual general meeting by a majority of the members assembled.

Article VII: Quorum
Section 1: A quorum for dealing with the business of MHADRTA at a regularly called meeting shall be the table officers and the members who are present.
Article VIII: Dues and Finances
Section 1: The annual membership fee shall be set at the annual general meeting each year and shall become payable the following September.
Section 2: Financial records shall be audited annually.
Section 3: The fiscal year shall be July 1 to June 30 of the following year.

Article IX: Conduct of Meetings
Section 1: Parliamentary procedure shall be observed at all meetings of MDADRTA
​
Article X: Election of ARTA Delegates
Section 1: At the MHADRTA annual general meeting, the membership shall elect the delegates to attend the annual general meeting of ARTA in accordance with the ARTA guidelines.
Section 2: Delegated must be members of ARTA,
